Non-Human elements - Mushroom Spores

Mushroom Spores

Phase contrast x 400

Mushroom spores may be confused with small helminth eggs.

Spores of predominantly dietaty origin can frequently be seen in human fecal specimens.

73 - Mushroom spores x 400
99 - Mushroom spore - phase contrast x400

This is the spore of an edible mushroom. Due to the size and shape of this small spore, it could be confused with a helminth egg.

The lack of internal structure, flattened side and small size (23 mm x 13 mm) distinguishes it from the pinworm egg.

The absence of an operculum distinguishes it from a trematode egg.
