Cyclospora species and artifacts

The plant element on the right resembles Cyclospora, on the left.

Note the uneven cell wall, the lack of internal granules and the bubbly appearance of the plant element.

The size is also much larger than Cyclospora

Yeast cells could be confused with Cyclospora oocysts in wet preparation.

The coccidian should be confirmed with the modified-Kinyoun acid-fast stain.

In the acid-fast stain, the oocysts of Cryptosporidium and Cyclospora stain pink to red. Yeasts are not acid fast and stain green.
