Frequently Asked Questions about
Human Metapneumovirus

Is this a new virus?

This is a newly-described virus, but there is evidence that it has been circulating worldwide for decades.

How prevalent is this virus?

Almost everyone is infected by age 5 years but recurrent infections have been documented.

What are the symptoms?

The clinical spectrum appears to be remarkably similar to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) with most patients having an upper respiratory tract infection but a minority having bronchiolitis or pneumonia.

Are some children at risk for more severe infections?

As with RSV, the risk of hospitalization is probably greatest in patients < 2 years of age and in those with underlying pulmonary or cardiac disease.

What is the treatment for this infection?

Treatment consists of symptomatic management only.

How can I protect myself and other patients?

Contact and droplet precautions should be implemented (consisting of scrupulous hand hygiene before and after patient contact plus gowning, gloving and masking).
